OSCON2k6 Day 3 Wrap Up - Hanging Out, Free as in Beer, and Command Prompt Gives Back

So after the building query interfaces talk I went down to the booth area. Turns out they were giving out beer, so that was a pretty wise decision. I hung out at the booth, talked to some people about postgresql, and talked to a number of postgresql people. It was pretty lively really; at one point Nasby ended up on Drake’s lap getting his nipples pinched [[image /xzilla/templates/default/img/emoticons/eek.png alt=”:-O” style=”display: inline; vertical-align: bottom;” class=”emoticon” /]] After a healthy amount of time down in the trade area, I went along to Wez Furlong’s [http://us3.php.net/pdo PHP PDO] talk. He basically gave an overview of PDO, the problems that it attempts to address, and how PDO attempts to address it. In the evening I had the choice of going to [http://oscamp.org/FOSCON FOSCON II] or checking out the Firefox Flicks screening. Oh, and a party from the open garden folks… in the end I decided on Foscon, but it turned out to be so overcrowded that we bailed out soon after we got there, catching a ride from Joshua Drake back up to the convention center. (Nice to see CMD giving back to the community [[image /xzilla/templates/default/img/emoticons/wink.png alt=”;-)” style=”display: inline; vertical-align: bottom;” class=”emoticon” /]] ) The firefox flicks presentation was actually pretty good. The showed off a number of the user submitted firefox “commercials”, many of which are available online at [http://firefoxflicks.com/ firefoxflicks.com]. From a community building stand-point, it’s pretty exciting, though I don’t suspect you could find that much excitement from the DBA community. (Want to prove me wrong? Send me your postgresql commercial videos!) Besides, they gave out free beer and popcorn. [[image /xzilla/templates/default/img/emoticons/smile.png alt=”:-)” style=”display: inline; vertical-align: bottom;” class=”emoticon” /]] After that i decided to call it a night; my talk was the next day so I figured I had better get started writing it [[image /xzilla/templates/default/img/emoticons/wink.png alt=”;-)” style=”display: inline; vertical-align: bottom;” class=”emoticon” /]] The two most bizarre things that happened to me yesterday were the guy who put yogurt on top of his cereal instead of milk (it’s been decided that while this was completly unacceptable, putting a bit of cereal in your yogurt is perfectly acceptable), and the guy who did a gross violation of cell-phone etiquette in the convention bathroom stall. (I’m not entirely sure of the etiquette involved there actually, but I’m pretty sure that when you are on the pot in a public restroom, there are **some** rules for what you can do and say)
